Ask any homeowner how many bats are too many bats in their home and they will certainly tell you one! The sight of a bat flying around the inside of a home is enough to send some people heading for the exit. Fortunately, Fox Valley Wildlife Control specializes in the removal of bats.

Bat Removal Services in the Fox Cities

Cities like Appleton, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Waupaca and Shawano were built around waterways like lakes, rivers, and streams which is what makes our area so attractive. Bats find it attractive too. Where you have water, you have insects, and where you have insects, you have bats! A colony of 100 little brown bats can eat hundreds of thousands of insects each summer. Bats are very important to Wisconsin’s ecology – just not in your home!

Two species of bats that typically find their way into homes are little brown bats and big brown bats. They raise one or two pups each year and both species are protected in Wisconsin. Bats, though pests in your home, are a highly misunderstood animal. Learn more about why they are a protected species, as well as information about the non-exclusion period, what to do if you find a bat in your home, and other FAQs from the state of Wisconsin.

Bat Exclusion

To remove bats from a building Fox Valley Wildlife Control uses a method called exclusion. It allow bats to exit in the evening, but not re-enter. It sounds simple. However, bat exclusions are meticulous work requiring trained professionals who understand bat behavior. We tell people there are two ways to do a bat exclusion:  do it right or do it again.

What is all involved in the process of bat exclusion? This safe and meticulous method involves covering an opening in your home where the brown bats can enter by using netting or tubes. With these coverings, the bats may safely exit their hideouts, however, they cannot crawl back in to re-enter your home.

With bat exclusion, the best times to begin the process are in late summer or early spring. The reason is that by mid-May, the females will give birth to their pups. Beginning the exclusion process around this time would mean that you will have orphaned infant bats in your attic.

You may be wondering: “Where will the bats live after they are removed from my home?” Once evicted, you can install bat boxes on your property away from your home, such as on a tree, for them to take shelter in. One advantage of encouraging the bats to still live on your property (and not in your home!) is that they will effectively take care of your insect problem. A single bat can eat 3,000 insects in just one night!

Top 5 Signs of Bats in Your Home

  1. You notice bat droppings. Bat droppings, also known as bat guano, is a sure sign that you have a colony of bats residing in your home. Our wildlife control experts will assess the type of animal infestation you are experiencing by examining the dung. Bat guano is commonly seen in piles near their entry and exit points.
  2. You hear sounds in your attic. While bats are relatively quiet creatures, you may start hearing them if one of them has become trapped inside your walls. If you’re hearing strange scratching noises in your attic, ceiling, or walls, you may want to call the pest control to investigate.
  3. Your attic has a strong odor. What’s that awful smell? Bat droppings and urine smells like a pungent, ammonia odor. If you’re noticing a strong smell and the odor persists, be sure to call wildlife control technicians to check for a bat infestation.
  4. You notice oily streaks in your home. When bats travel to and from your home, they will leave behind a dark, streaky, oily mark. Be sure to look for wherever you have holes in your home that are just large enough for a bat to squeeze through. Oily streaks are one of the tell-tale signs that wildlife control technicians look for when assessing for a bat infestation.
  5. You see a bat in your home. Just because you see one bat in your home, does not mean you have an actual infestation. However, it should prompt any homeowner to closely investigate. If you ever see a bat flying or crawling around in your home, however, – don’t panic. Bats are naturally docile creatures that seldom harm humans, so try to safely help it escape by opening a window. If you find the bat in a more enclosed space or room without a window, please call our bat removal experts and we’ll help you safely remove the critter from your home.
